We're only TWO WEEKS AWAY from our Winter Gathering!

So come on out to Camp to join us on the afternoon of Saturday, December 2nd from 2-6pm! It'll be fun and it'll be free, so let us know you're coming here!

What exactly IS Winter Gathering?

Well, explained in run-on-sentence form:

Winter Gathering is a cold weather Summer Camp reunion, a Camp Family holiday party, a winter-craft-activity-bonanza, and great chance to introduce friends to our program, and of course a celebration of the kick-off of Registration for Summer 2018!

Look how happy...

All these folks were...

At last year's Winter Gathering!

So join us this year!

It's a great chance to catch up with...

Your Camp Family...

And to smile...

Summer 2018: New Camp Classes!

We now have over 30 different classes to choose from in a single session of Summer Camp, and finding a few new and innovate ways to pass a summer day is one of our favorite things. This season, those favorite things will come with two brand-new programming areas on 4-H Camp for our campers to enjoy.

So with that, let's get right to one of our favorite things:

Canoe-nity Gardening

For several years now, our most-requested-new-class-at-Camp has been campers, parents, and staff clamoring for a gardening program. We’re now thrilled to be able to oblige, and with a good ol’ Campy twist no less: our community garden is in fact a CANOE-nity Garden. We love to repurpose here at 4-H Camp, so we’ve taken some of our decommissioned canoes and rowboats and turned them into garden planters near the entrance to Camp. Campers will learn the basics of gardening, all while caring for, tending too, (and of course watering) our Camp Canone-nity Garden. Like everything else at Camp, the fun comes from getting your educational crash-course in gardening in a hands-on, in-the-dirt, learn-by-doing manner. Why, the fruits, vegetables, and herbs our campers harvest might just even find their way to the Camp kitchen, onto the salad bar, or into that evening’s meal.

Throwing Stuff

There’s a simple fact we’ve come to embrace here at 4-H Camp: throwing stuff is fun. It is simply fun to throw stuff! However, we’d often have to tell our campers (especially, but not exclusively, our younger campers) that it was neither the time nor the place to throw the rocks, sticks, and pine cones that lie around the forests of 4-H Camp. But now, with the introduction of this brand-new activity, during our Throwing Stuff class IS the time, and our Throwing Range IS the place. Campers will hike back to our secluded throwing range, collect that day’s projectiles, and safely engage in the time-honored tradition of hurling objects at a variety targets. Through a series of our camp-made, rustic, natural and wild carnival games, campers will get to put their accuracy, speed, timing, and strategic creativity to the test. It’s yet another Camp offering of a way to simply enjoy yourself, having a fun time with some new friends, playing some games outside.

-----

Plus!

In addition!

And also!

We've got a few New Old Classes!

Or Classes We've Had Before in The Past But Are Now Slightly Different!

Or Revamped Classes!

Oh. That last one sounds best. Let's go with that.

And now, plus also in addition, our REVAMPED CLASSES for Summer 2018 are:

 CIT I: The Camp Community

(For Campers 15 years of age)

Our oldest campers often know that 4-H Camp is a special place from the multiple summers they’ve spent here. However, our CIT I class allows them the opportunity to engage in a deep examination of what makes this Camp community tick, and to begin to take a behind the scenes look at the work needed to create the kind, respectful, and supportive environment that we endeavor 4-H Camp to be. Our CIT I program involves several deep discussions sharing the CITs’ individual camp experience, various team-building activities, and some Camp service projects that will include spending some time in our brand-new Canoe-nity Garden. They will also partake in a unique CIT I only camp-out, that will serve to help the group get to know each other, as well as provide another opportunity to look into what makes “camp” Camp. In addition they may also occasionally have some added responsibility during All-Camp games or other events, and be expected to behave like a model camper at all points during the week. CIT I is the first step in our leadership program, and the beginning of a journey to one-day becoming a Junior Counselor, or perhaps even a full summer staff member.

This course has been retooled and re-imagined for Summer 2018, so participants will be the first to engage in this new Camp tradition.

Camp Journal

Camp Reporter is now…Camp Journal! Camp Journal is 4-H Camp’s own creative writing class. Through various writing exercises, campers will get the chance to document, record, and expound upon the goings-on and unique experiences of their Camp week. The pieces may range from being a diary of their time in the cabins, to a partly-fact-mostly-fiction exposé on the zaniness of a session’s particular theme. The class will travel to all sorts of peaceful and inspiring sections of 4-H Camp, and the variety of writing prompts will be certain to get all our campers’ creative juices flowing! At the end of the class, all campers will be left with a memoir of their own Camp week, written in a style specific to each and every one of them.

---

We can't wait to discover the potential these new classes hold as we create them together with our campers over the seven sessions of Summer 2018!

Check out our full course offerings list here, and start getting excited to sign up for Camp in only 18 DAYS when Polar Bear Registration kicks of December 2nd.

Summer 2018: The Grand Theme Unveiling (Part II)

Our unveiling of our schedule of themes for 2017 continues!

We'll be finishing off our offerings by bringing back two Camp favorites and introducing one brand-new-never-before-done-because-it's-that-brand-new theme...

So...without further ado...

(cause you know we can't stand ado...)

YOUR remaining themes...

(You don't need to drum roll again. Your drum roll from earlier in the week will suffice.)

For Summer 2018...

(Unless you really want to drum roll again. If that's the case, I certainly won't stop you. Drum rolling is fun.)

ARE...

(Ah, who are we kidding. We know you've already scrolled quickly past this section.)

Session 2:  Jurassic Camp

July 9th-14th

Welcome to…Jurassic Camp! Our 108 acre woods has once again been transformed into a Paleozoic-paradise, filled with a whole host of prehistoric creatures waiting to be discovered. Yes, Stokes State Forest’s usual residents (squirrels, chipmunks, owls, and the like) will be joined by dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes. Adventure will surely ensue as our new Camp Dino-Friends need to be helped, assisted, caught, learned about and released again. There will be giant dino-egg hunts, fossil finds, and brand-new-never-before-seen species of dinosaurs will be discovered, imagined and created. If campers are lucky, they might even catch a glimpse of the legendary Dino-camp-osaurus.

Session 4: Pirates of Lake Shawanni

July 23rd-28th

We’re bringing back an all-time-camper-favorite-theme that we haven’t done in four seasons! Lake Shawanni will once again become our seven seas, our animal groups will be feuding crews, and all the campers shall be mateys together. Shores will be ahoyed, timbers will be shivered, and treasure will be plundered (as talking like a Pirate constantly and more than necessary will certainly be key to the week.) Though we’ll still have Battle for the Island for all the land lovers out there, it will be joined by a legendary All-Camp-Game exclusive to Pirate Week: Battle for the LAKE! And of course, Captain Sompton O’Rudder will almost certainly once again be up to no good. Through all the fun, adventure, and mis-adventure of Pirate Week, we’ll also be sure to avoid scurvy with our supply of fresh fruit.

Session 6: Camp Whodunnit?

August 6th-11th

It’s time for a brand-new, never before tried theme with our first Camp Whodunnit? Week. Why, the mystery of this week runs so deep that we can’t give out too many details, but suffice to say during Session #6, 2018 an…incident will occur. An incident so surprising, so confounding, so mysterious that the entire Camp community will need to work together to sort through all the clues, hints, tip-offs, suspects and red-herrings. It’s too mysterious to describe further in this public forum, but we can say that it will be a puzzle wrapped in a riddle hidden within an enigma all tied together by a cryptogram. In fact, chances are that the whole Camp schedule will need to be re-arranged as we all drop everything to get to the bottom of what’s going on. Our patented game of All-Camp-Clue will only be the beginning as all the campers band together to solve this massive mystery.

---

And there we have it!

Seven weeks of summer, seven sessions, seven different themes, and from these mere ingredients we'll create all the outlandish fun, epic goofiness and indescribable moments of the 2018 Summer Camp season at 4-H Camp. We can't wait for you to join us for it.

Summer 2018: The Grand Theme Unveiling (Part I)

Yes!

The time has come!

As our campers begin to design their 2018 summer at Camp, we thought it might be crucial to let them know WHEN our Camp sessions were, and WHAT the always-exciting themes would be.

For Part I of the Grand Theme Unveiling, we'll be bringing out some of our classic themes we present summer after summer, as well as one that went over so well last season we just couldn't help ourselves from bringing it back for more.

So.

Ehem.

Drum roll, please.

(You know how it works.

At Camp, we can't unveil anything until there's a drum roll.

So drum on your desk.

Drum on your phone.

Drum wherever you may be.

Drum roll. Please:)

Session 1: Classic Camp 4th of July

July 1st-7th

We always kick-off our summer season with a week of classic Camp. The week will include a 4th of July celebration as only Camp can offer, a great array of tried-and-true All-Camp activities, as well as the excitement of being around for the very beginning of the 2018 Camp season. We anticipate a slightly lower enrollment this week than the rest of the summer, so it’s a great choice for campers who like a smaller Camp community, campers who are brand-new to L.G. Cook, or our campers who just want to be with us right from the beginning of a new summer season.

(Enrollment in Session #1 also comes with a special perk – an extra night of Camp is included free of charge! All Session 1 attendees can join us Sunday night for our Camp Eve celebration, and get a head start on the summer season. Our standard Monday morning drop-off time will still be available as well.)

Session 3: CHAOS!

July 16th-21st

For over ten years, Chaos week has become a mainstay of our season here at Camp. It’s near the middle of the summer and it’s at this point the staff seems to go just a little…off the deep end. A little crazy. A little nutty. A little wacky. A little…chaotic, if you will. As much as we try to keep things calm and orderly with our Wednesday Night “PrankBusters” activity, nothing can seem to curtail the unpredictable zaniness…until near the end of the week when we call in our resident Chaos Expert (a certain Evil Doctor) to preside over a Kangaroo Court and send the guiltiest counselors through his patented Chaos Machine. No one can ever tell exactly what Chaos Week will bring, but it’s a safe bet that some of the staff will end up covered in ice cream.

Session 5: Brokener Time Machine Week

July 30th-August 4th

So, last summer the unimaginable, the unpredictable, the unforeseeable, happened! Our good ol’ trusty Camp Time Machine broke! But don’t worry. We hauled it back into the maintenance shop, brought out some ancient wrenches, and fixed it good-as-new. Yes, we didn’t just give it a once-over, we’ve double checked and TRIPLE checked the ol’ Camp Time Machine to be sure it’s working perfectly, with no glitches, bugs, or hiccups what so ever. So this summer, we’ll be able to fire up the ol’ contraption and smoothly journey to all the great historic time periods, from the Stone Age to Ancient Rome to The Renaissance and off to the future and beyond. It’ll all go perfectly, and we guarantee we’ll get to and from all of our destinations with no issues or exciting mishaps what-so-ever. We mean, c’mon, there’s no possible way that the Time Machine is somehow going to get broken two years in-a-row.

Session 7: S’moregasbord

August 13th-18th

The traditional end of summer festival! For our final week of the summer we celebrate the fun we’ve had all season long by bringing back some of our favorite themes and activities from earlier in the year, as well as enjoying all the classic summer camp elements that make L.G. Cook 4-H Camp so great. S’moregasbord week also features a handful of end-of-summer-only events like our End-of-Season BBQ and the ceremonial launching of the Wish Boats. The last week of Camp for the summer is always a special one, so come join all the counselors and staff in wishing the 2018 season a fond farewell.

Stay tuned for The Grand Unveiling (Part II) as we announce what themes we will be bringing in new for 2018...

Talking our schedule of themes! Talking our brand-new classes! Talking all-the-news-fit-to-print-to-pump-you-up-and-get-you-excited-for-another-summer-season-before-Polar-Bear-Registration-Opens-in-December-at-our-WINTER-GATHERING! Talking all that!

So stay tuned! And also...have a Happy Halloween.

*All credit for the fine Camp-O-Lantern goes to our friends at Paramus Catholic High School, who constructed it on their recent retreat.

From the Archives of '17: A Blur of Summer Till Saturday Morning

Time for another...

Trip back to...

Delve into...

The archives...

For some unseen...

Photos of '17!

The focus of this edition?

Why,

after all the different days...

All the...

Different...

Evenings...

And all...

The different...

Nights...

Of a Summer Camp week...

After...

All the...

Ceremonies...

And celebrations...

And memories...

To last a lifetime...

After it all...

We...

Always...

Wind up...

The...

Exact...

Same...

Place:

Saturday Morning!

Yes, every single...

Zany week of Summer Camp...

Always comes in for a landing...

The exact same way...

By ending with a classic Summer Camp...

Saturday morning.

Every camper...

Gets a chance...

To address the Camp as a whole...

In our World-Famous...

Thank You Circle.

Then it's time...

For group hugs...

And preliminary goodbyes...

As we prepare...

To...

March on up...

To the bowl...

And...

Greet our...

Parents...

After a whole week away.

And how do we greet them?

With another closing ceremony, of course!

We do our very best...

(But always fail)...

To try to sum up...

All that went on this week in the woods at Summer Camp.

Then we give some awards!
We recognize our Honor Campers!

We recognize our CITs.

And at the end of Summer 2017...

We welcomed the inaugural members...

Of our Three Million Club:

Campers who has spent the WHOLE summer with us at Camp.

All 7 weeks...

All 3 million plus seconds of summer.

We recognize an honor counselor...

And we happen to recognize some staff...

Who've been coming across the ocean to spend their summers with us for a long time.

See: Hugging and crying...

Isn't just for the campers.

Then! Even our Closing-est of Closing Ceremonies...

Has to close some time.

So we sing one last song...

And the counselors find their spots...

Campers find their counselors...

And parents find their campers.
Then it's time for some...

Obligatory...

Photos with the Director...

And his...

Coffee cup.

And time for photos with new friends!

And photos of entire cabins full...

Of new friends.

Then all that's left of Saturday Morning is to say...

"See ya next summer!",

And head off! Off to tell some Camp stories, off to take a nap, and off...

To look forward to fondly reminiscing...

All autumn long.

Thanks to everyone who sent some photos from the summer my way for inclusion in this trip to the archives!
